This upcoming weekend marks the eighth annual SUPERMARKET Art Fair, an independent arts happening in Stockholm, Sweden. What started out as “Minimarket” in 2006 as a reaction to a new commercial art fair called Market has grown into the aptly titled SUPERMARKET Art Fair, a massive event that celebrates the international independent contemporary arts community. SUPERMARKET has evolved to become more than just a once-a-year event; the art fair has inspired a continual international arts dialogue, a network of artists and collectors, and even an artist-run magazine.
SUPERMARKET has been hosted by Stockholm’s Kulturhuset, or “House of Culture,” since 2010, and has always been organized by artists as a way to celebrate artist-run galleries and other arts initiatives. The annual art fair attracts a global audience of artists, gallerists, collectors, museum directors, curators, and anyone at all who appreciates contemporary art and wants to support the community that surrounds it. SUPERMARKET evokes an independent, DIY spirit, which is illustrated in its dedication to creating conversations about contemporary art, rather than mere art purchases.
According to the event’s organizers, “The goal of Supermarket is to provide a showcase for artists’ initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for new networks in the Swedish and international art scenes. It is also an art fair that strives to offer the visitor an experience, rather than focusing on sales,” of the emphasis on the overall experience SUPERMARKET provides. SUPERMARKET invites artists of all mediums to participate, and features paintings, sculpture, installation art, video, prints, and performances, among many other disciplines at the annual fair.
If you don’t have access to the art fair in Stockholm you can still join the conversation by getting a copy of the SUPERMARKET art magazine, or by learning more about local independent arts initiatives. Visit SUPERMARKET Art Fair’s official website for more information.
